Astrology and colour

As a practising graphic designer - colour has been of great importance in my life. When presenting ideas and inspiration the choice of colour can make or break the mood! Something that my astrological studies has revealed is the significance and relation of the astrological (zodiac) signs and the colours that they represent.

In order to understand this we need to think about the seasons. The zodiacal wheel is directly related to the wheel of the year. In tropical astrology we use what is known as the ecliptic that starts at 0º Aries as the beginning of the astrological year. This in real time relates to spring.

The ecliptic and the path of the sun

When considering the use of colour personally, whether for communicating visuals or even dressing to impress, we may find that naturally we are drawn to particular colours. But did you know that your sun, moon or rising sign may be influencing your choice?

ARIES

As the start of the zodiacal year, Aries is a fire sign ruled by the planet Mars. So if we think of Mars firstly, it’s a red planet. Fire is red and orange. It is a cardinal sign which represents new beginnings and the drive to start and get things done (similar in a way to new moon energy - the beginning of the cycle). So as we awake from the winter slumber spring brings forth new beginnings and an awakening. The heat of the sun is increased and a warmth arises within. We look forward and not back. Burnt orange, burgundy reds, purples and deep yellows embody the energy of the rising sun. In spring we often see spectacular sunrises and each day brings promise of something birthing anew.

TAURUS

As we move through spring the first green shoots appear brining signs of that which has been hiding beneath the soil. Taurus is Venus ruled which loves beauty and sensuality. The first scents of spring are revealed as bulbs open to reveal the first flowers of the season. Colour begins to speckle the landscape. Taurus is a fixed sign which shows us that we are in the middle of spring - it has taken hold. Fresh greens of shoots, pale yellow flowers, deep green hues, earthy soil and a freshness is seen here.

GEMINI

The season starts to shift again as we move towards summer. The sky is brighter, the sun is warmer, the weather is more changeable. Here we see Gemini in its full mutability, changing and merging with the flow. brighter blue skies, fresh green grass, the orange of the fields, deep blues in the evening skies.

CANCER

The summer is here and the warmth begins. Lavender skies and hazy summer days begin. Cancer is Cardinal - the beginning of warmth ahead. Turquoise blue sparkling sea, golden tinges of the evening sunset and deep purple as the sun sets.

LEO

Summer is here. Golden tinged skin and sandy beaches. Hot sunshine orange with red skies at night. Sun tinged landscapes and dazzling sunsets of fire. Oranges, yellows, reds and gold. The Halycon days. Good times are here. Fixed energy of the middle of summer - heightened mood and enlightened faces.

VIRGO

A change in the air, cooling of the days ahead. Misty sunrise and sunsets. A slight nip in the evening air. Deep greens and golden leaves as they start to turn and prepare to drop. Gentler shades of brown and muted beige for this earthy sign. We turn to the earth to take out the last of the crops. Storing squash for winter and watching the pumpkins ripening. Changeable and unpredictable but a time of planning ahead and solidifying ideas.

LIBRA

The leaves are curling and a blanket of gold covers the ground. Deep purple skies in contrast with the burnt orange leaves. We are in Autumn now and it has taken hold and is preparing us for the change. Cardinal action.

SCORPIO

Deep into autumn the nights draw in. The witching season is here. Golden glows from shop windows in the darker evenings with hues of deep purple and burgundy red. An indigo blue evening sky. The grey of the daytime as the clouds move in but a silver lining in the freshness of the moon in the crisp evening air.

SAGITTARIUS

Coats are on and the winter chill is creeping in. The sky is deeper with shades of royal blue and plum. Oranges are tinged with shades of pink and yellows are deepened and found in the last stage of the early setting sun.

CAPRICORN

Winter is here with its crisp cold magic and fingers of ice that turn shades of grey and blue across the landscape. Grey browns of the bare branches are exposed. The greens are darkened and muted into Saturn’s stony cold territory.

AQUARIUS

The cold days of January are set in, fixed energy in the heart of winter. Icy breath, delicate pastel skies, gentle blues are found in the frost of early morning. This is deep winter. Delicate leaves are hidden by snow.

PISCES

Hope is in the air as the harshness of winter subsides and starts to lesson its hold on the land. Gentle lavenders and subtle blues are tinged with purple hues as the coldness breaks and adds elements of warmth into the landscape. Sunny days break through the grey bringing Jupiterian optimism and hope for the lighter and warmer days ahead. We start to plan and dream in a Neptunian abstract landscape.

Incorporating astrological themed colours into our lives can help us to embrace and utilise the energy of our astrological chart. A good example of working with colours is by looking at the days of the week and the planetary rulerships that govern them and wearing appropriate colours in order to channel their energy.
